Essay Structure

Writing an essay is not as simple as just putting words together and hoping for a coherent result. Just like with any other written work, an essay needs a structure so it is easy to read. Moreover, having a definite structure is important to facilitate an effective flow of information.

First of all, you need to choose a topic that is interesting to you. Make sure that your topic is not all over the place or limits you. Next, prepare an outline. This is so you will know how to approach your topic without veering off topic. It also helps to avoid spending too much time thinking about what to include in the other pages. After preparing an outline, create a strong thesis to serve as your essay’s focal point. All your subsequent discourse must flow from this thesis statement.

After this, begin writing the body. This helps to write an appropriate introduction and conclusion. It is more advisable to write the body first to know how to properly introduce and end the topic. Once you have done this, reread the essay and edit your work.

Look at this sample essay:
Topic: Why Roger Federer is the best tennis player of all time.
Thesis statement: Roger Federer is the best tennis player to hold a racket because of his longevity at the top and the number of records he broke along the way.
Outline:

  • He is the best because of his record-breaking 289 weeks at the top.
  • He is the best because of the number of grand slams he has won in his career.

The greatness of an athlete is measured by his or her achievement in the sport. If achievements then are the barometer for greatness, then it is safe to say that Roger Federer is the best. This can lead to varied opinions because as of late, some tennis players like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have been performing really well. Then again, if achievements were to be the main criteria, Roger Federer is the best that has ever held a racket because of his longevity at the top and the number of records he broke along the way.

The greatness of an athlete is measured by their athletic achievements. If achievements are the barometer for greatness then it is safe to say that Roger Federer is the best. Others argue that tennis players like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have been performing just as exceptionally. Then again, if achievements are the main criteria, Roger Federer is by far the best that has ever held a racket. His longevity at the top and the number of records he has broken along the way all testify to his athletic greatness.

Roger Federer is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time because of the number of weeks he has been the top player in the world. His stranglehold on the top position started in 2004, when he beat Marat Safin for the Australian Open title. This marked his era of dominance in the sport, winning title after title. He stayed at the top, despite the challenges coming from the likes of Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin, and Rafael Nadal. All of these people were some of the most brilliant tennis players at the time. But by the end of 2008, he finally lost the top spot to Nadal. Nonetheless, he never fell outside the top 4 and eventually became number one again in 2012 when he beat Novak Djokovic for the Wimbledon title. Overall, he has spent 237 consecutive weeks at the top, more than any other player, and a total of 289 weeks being the best player in the world.

Staying at the top indicates that a player has won a considerable number of titles. Federer won many titles and a record-breaking 17 grand slams. He won his breakthrough Wimbledon title in 2003 and never looked back. Overall, he has won 4 Australian Open titles, 5 US Open titles, 7 Wimbledon titles, and 1 French Open title.

Roger Federer is the best tennis player because he holds the record for the most weeks being the number one tennis player. Moreover, he won a record number of grand slams, which are the most prestigious and competitive tournaments in tennis. If achievements are the criteria for greatness then it is obvious that Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time.
